Cardinal Crew Finishes First Among U.S. Schools For Second Straight Year at Head of the Charles Regatta

BOSTON, Mass. - For the second straight year, the University of Louisville rowing team finished tops among schools from the United States and second overall in the Collegiate 8+ race Sunday at the 40th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The Cardinals completed the 2.3-mile course in 12 minutes, 57.777 seconds to finish ahead of every U.S. team in the 50-boat race and win a silver medal. The Minerva Rowing Club of the Netherlands was the only team to defeat U of L as it won the race with a time of 12:50.999.
"I'm really pleased with the way we prepared for this race and the drive we had for this type of finish," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "To finish as the top U.S. boat for the second straight year against so many good crews says a lot about our program and the direction we're moving in. We're excited about going to Philadelphia (Head of the Schuylkill) next week, and hopefully, we'll be able to find even more speed for that race."
This marks the fourth consecutive year the Cardinal crew has had a strong showing at the Head of the Charles after bringing home second place in 2003, third place in 2002 and fourth place (Club 8+) in 2001. U of L also finished ahead of three future Big East Conference foes with West Virginia in third (13:15.854), Villanova in sixth (13:20.192) and Connecticut in 18th (13:44.584).
The Head of the Charles, first held in 1965, is the largest two-day regatta in the world. Hosted by the Cambridge Boat Club, the event annually draws nearly 300,000 spectators and 7,000 athletes to the banks of the Charles River.
Louisville wraps up its fall season next Saturday at the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
