Lena Ustymenko had 25 kills and a block to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-24, 33-31, 30-18 sweep of TCU in Conference USA volleyball action in Ft. Worth Friday night.
U of L improves to 15-2 and 5-0 in Conference USA. TCU falls to 13-6 and suffered their first lost in league play at 4-1.
"Any time you get a road win in the league it is important. And they were undefeated in Conference play and an experienced team playing on their home floor," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We are very pleased to get this win."
In the first game, U of L built at 15-10 lead in the early going. TCU fell further behind, trailing 25-16 and being forced to call time-out. The Frogs responded with a 6-3 run and Louisville called a time-outs leading 26-20 to try to regain momentum. U of L got to game point on a kill by Lena Ustymenko and a kill by Steph Marsh gave them the 30-24 win. U of L hit .225 to TCU's .087.
In the second game, U of L took an early lead at 17-10 before TCU ran off seven straight points to tie at 11 and take its first lead at 25-24. U of L got to game point first at 29-27 but TCU tied it at 29 and then scored on a U of L miss. The teams traded points until, tied at 31, Marsh and Ustymenko each had a kill to seal the 33-31 for the Cardinals. Hitting heated up for the Cardinals with U of L connection in .341 to TCU's .300. Ustymenko had six kills, no errors on 19 attacks to lead the Cardinals in the second set.
In the final set, U of L used strong hitting and blocking to put the Horned Frogs away. The Cardinals hit .368 to TCU's .132 and outblocked them 4-2. U of L used a big 12-4 run in the final set to overpower TCU.
The Cardinals, who have not been outblocked all season, had an 8-6 edge. U of L had two other hitters in double digit kills with Bing Sun and Ana Yartseva adding 10 and 11 respectively. U of L travels to Houston for a match Saturday evening.
