The University of Louisville women's tennis team, which has six new faces with just two returning veterans, debuted its new look at the adidas Invitational in Peachtree City, Ga. over the weekend.
The flighted tournament had no team scores, but second year coach Greg Davis was pleased with the individual play of his squad, most of whom had not competed together as a team.
"We had a great weekend in terms of quality competition," said Davis. "When you play the likes of Duke, Florida, Northwestern, TCU and some other nationally ranked programs it definitely helps you become a better team."
Davis was pleased with singles play but saw where doubles play still needed some attention.
"Our doubles play was inconsistent and has a ways to go. We are light years ahead of where we were last year at the same time." said Davis of the team that set a school record for wins with 22 in 2002-03.
He cited the singles play of newcomers Michele Spiess and Christina Gogol.
"We had two great performances from our freshmen Michele (Spiess) and Christina (Gogol). Spiess had a great tournament in the top flight with wins over Northwestern and Wisconsin. Gogol did very well in Flight B with three consecutive wins over Tennessee (twice) and TCU."
Davis feels the first weekend laid the groundwork for this weekend when the team travels to Bloomington to the Indiana University Invitational.
"As always, we are attempting to get quality performances out of all eight players," said Davis. "No question it helps us get ready to perform at the highest level spring season.
