LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing coach Richard Ruggieri announced today that two student-athletes from Canada have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and row for the Cardinals during the 2003-04 academic year.
Lia Renaud, a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Woodstock, Ontario, is one of the stronger junior rowers in Canada. A well-rounded rower with balanced performances in both the 2,000-meter and 6,000-meter erg tests, she is very adaptable in that she can row either port, starboard or even as a single sculler.
Renaud helped Canada to second-place finishes in the Women's 8+ and Women's Double races at the 2002 CanAmex Regatta in Cincinnati, Ohio, and also competed at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in the Jr. 1x, Under 23 Double and Under 23 Quad. She placed third in the Junior Single at the 2002 Canadian Schoolboys Regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Nicole Alderson, a graduate of Waterdown High School in Carlisle, Ontario, competed for the Leander Rowing Club. She also played ice hockey and football in high school and was nominated as team captain in both sports in grades 12 and 13.
In 2002, Alderson led her Youth 8+ crew to a 10th-place finish at the Head of the Charles. She finished fifth in the Junior Women's Category at the 2002 Canadian Indoor Ergatta and 13th in the Under 23 race in 2003. During her novice year, she led her crew to wins at the Head of the Ohio in the Novice 8+ and Youth 4+ races.
"We are extremely excited to have Lia and Nicole join our program," said Ruggieri. "They are both tall and very athletic, which will enhance their development in their rowing abilities. Lia and Nicole are perfect fits to our program and will help us get closer to our goals."
