LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Bing Sun had 16 kills and six blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-26, 30-23, 30-27 sweep of Houston in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday in Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 17-4 and 10-1 in conference play. UH drops to 8-17 and 4-7 in the league.
"We were hitting very well tonight and our block was holding which gave us an advantage," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We have a long-standing friendly rivalry with Houston so we would never take them for granted."
The Cardinals outblocked Houston 10-3 and their .350 hitting offset UH's strong serving. UH had eight aces and Louisville had 10 service errors. Three Cardinals had double digit kills with Sonja Percan adding 15 and Lena Ustymenko adding 11.
In the first game, UH scored the first four points but the Cardinals came back to tie at nine. The game stayed close from that point until U of L outscored Houston 5-1 after tying at 25.
In the second game, U of L skated out to a 9-4 lead. An 8-2 run pushed the Cardinals to a 20-13 lead and Coach Bill Walton had to use both his timeouts to try to regroup. UH responded with an 8-2 run fell short as a kill by Adriana Morris took U of L to game point and a Bing Sun cross court shot ended the comeback at 30-23.
Houston used a four-point run early in the final game to build a two-point lead at 12-10 on an ace by Kelly McAnelly. The Cards managed to tie at 18 and took their first lead at 23-22 on a kill by Jennifer Hoffman. The Cardinals pulled away to a four point lead and forced a Houston timeout. The Cougars ran off four points to tie at 27 and Yelin had to call his own timeout to cool the Houston momentum. U of L took the lead at 28 on a Houston lift and then kills by Bing Sun and Percan ended the match.
UH was led by Cinthia Piva's 12 kills and two aces.
U of L plays intrastate rival Kentucky at 7:30 on Monday at Cardinal Arena.
