NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A hard-fought three-set win at No. 1 singles, the doubles victory and some help from the new kids on the block helped the University of Louisville women's tennis team to a 5-2 upset victory over No. 64 ranked Michigan State in a dual meet held at Vanderbilt.
Newcomer Marie Louise Frolich-Hansen took over the No .1 single slot for the Cardinals and came back to beat MSU's Caroline Lay 6-3, 6-4 after losing the first set 1-6. Frolich-Hansen joined the Cardinals last week, arriving from Denmark and helped lead U of L to its first win over a Big Ten opponent since the 1985-86 season when U of L beat Illinois 6-3. .
"We fought very hard and I am ecstatic about this win. We plan to build on it during the rest of the season," said first year head coach Greg Davis. "Anytime you beat a Big Ten school it is a big, big win."
Frolich-Hansen teamed up with Kelly Taylor to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-6. Taylor joined the Cardinals at the semester last season and helped bolster U of L's lineup at both No. 6 and No. 4. Taylor also won her No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Asa Liden.
The Cardinals also received help from Julie Penn, who struggled with injuries the first semester. She beat Shelly Brady 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
"It was great to see Julie (Penn) perform up to her potential without injury," said Davis. Paige Eber and Jasmine Singh combined for a doubles win at No. 3 and Singh won her singles match 7-5, 6-2 over Kate Thomas.
