LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Prileu Davis, a 6-3, 175-pound guard from Phoenix (Ariz.) College, has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his basketball playing career at the University of Louisville.
Davis, whose first name is pronounced PRAY-low, averaged 22.9 points, 5.3 assists and 3.2 steals as a sophomore last season at Phoenix College. He shot 46 percent from the field, including 41 percent from three-point range, and 82 percent at the free throw line.
"We're excited to have Prileu as a member of our team," said U of L Men's Basketball Coach Rick Pitino. "He has the leadership necessary to compete against a very difficult schedule we will face. He has the size, strength and quickness to provide experience and depth for us at point guard and is the type of person we are looking for as a student-athlete at U of L."
As a freshman, Davis averaged 12.4 points, 5.1 assists and 2.7 steals in helping Phoenix College produce an 18-12 record and the regional championship. With a depleted roster from that team, Phoenix posted an 12-18 mark last season. Davis scored a school-record 47 points vs. Cochise this season, and poured in 44 against Glendale.
Davis prepped at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix, where he teamed with Richard Jefferson -- a former Arizona standout and current New Jersey Nets forward -- to produce a 27-3 record and reach the state 4A championship game his junior year.
"Prileu is a very versatile player," said Phoenix Coach Kip Banks. "He was recruited by schools as both a point and shooting guard. He's very strong with the basketball, shoots well off the dribble or off the pass, is very quick and moves well without the ball. His explosion onto the collegiate scene is no accident. He works really hard to improve himself and has a great desire to continue to grow as a person and player."
Davis also considered Kansas, Minnesota and Texas A & M before choosing to attend Louisville.
Davis becomes the fourth signee and the fifth new addition to the Cardinals' roster. U of L signed three players during the November signing period: Kendall Dartez, a 6-10, 220-pound center/forward from Vincennes (Ind.) College, Taquan Dean, a 6-2, 175-pound guard from Neptune (N.J.) High School, and Francisco Garcia, a 6-7, 210-pound forward from the Winchendon (Mass.) School. Marvin Stone, a 6-10 forward/center from Huntsville, Ala., transferred from Kentucky to U of L in January and will have one year to participate after completing the fall semester.
