The awards continue to roll in for the 2001 AXA Liberty Bowl Champion Louisville Cardinals as junior southpaw quarterback Dave Ragone was named the 2001 Chuck Heaton Award winner by the Cleveland Touchdown Club.
The award, named after former Cleveland Plain-Dealer sportswriter Chuck Heaton, designates the top Division I football player from the greater Cleveland area.
Ragone, who claimed his second consecutive Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the Cards to a school record 11-2 mark and a victory over BYU in the AXA Liberty Bowl this season, is a strong candidate for All-America honors heading into his senior year.
As a junior, Ragone completed 231 of 383 passes for 3,056 yards and 23 touchdowns while leading the Cards to their second straight Conference USA title. Over his two-year career as a starter, Ragone has posted a 20-5 mark, including an impressive 11-2 record in conference games. Heading into his senior campaign in 2002, Ragone will be seeking an unprecedented third straight league title for the Cards and his third consecutive league offensive player of the year honor.
Ragone will be presented with the award in a ceremony held at the Radisson Hotel on Engle Road in his hometown of Middleburg Heights, Ohio at 6:00 p.m. on February 18. For tickets or further information, please call (440) 669-3249 or (440) 717-0465.
