MUNCIE, Ind. - The tenth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team opened up league play on the road Friday with a 3-0 win over Mid-American Conference opponent Ball State. Louisville stretched its winning streak to six games.
Sophomore Elisa Eshelman opened the scoring for the U of L Cardinals, when she netted an unassisted goal 15 minutes into the game. She added a second goal with 1:22 remaining in the half with an assist from Olivia Netzler. Louisville took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Netzler gave U of L an insurance goal when she connected on a feed from Susan Sattazahn to make the score 3-0 with 12:17 remaining in the game.
Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey collected nine saves en route to her third shutout of the season. Ball State Goalkeeper Susan McDowell allowed three goals and made eight stops.
Ball State falls to 3-2 (0-1) on the season.
Louisville (6-1, 1-0) will travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. to take on MAC opponent Central Michigan on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
NOTES: Louisville remains ranked at No. 10 in the STX/NFHCA Division I rankings (Sept. 11). This week's rankings were not released, due to last week's tragic events.
