Louisville Notes
- Louisville's defense, which ranked second nationally with 38 forced turnovers last season (Florida led with 40), recovered four Aggie fumbles. The Cardinals scored 28 points off turnovers, including two defensive scores.
- LB Michael Brown's 81-yard fumble return for a TD was his second career touchdown. He scored on an interception return against Chattanooga on Sept. 11, 1999. Brown was selected as the game's most valuable player.
- WR Deion Branch (5 catches, 109 yards, 2 TDs) surpassed 100 receiving yards for the sixth time in his 13-game career with the Cardinals. His two touchdowns marked his third multi-TD game for U of L.
- Louisville outscored New Mexico State 22-0 in the second half, picking up on a trend from last season when the Cardinals held a 222-93 scoring advantage after intermission. U of L held a second-half scoring advantage in 11 of its 12 games last season (all but vs. Florida State).
- RB Henry Miller's two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was his first career score.
- WR J.R. Russell's second quarter 13-yard TD catch marked his first career touchdown.
- DE Devon Thomas' 87-yard fumble return for a touchdown was his first career TD.
- Among those in attendance at the game were Kentucky Governor Paul Patton and former U of L Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger, currently the head football coach at Florida Atlantic University.
- This was the inaugural John Thompson Foundation Challenge Football Classic, an exempt event which kicked off the NCAA 2001 football season.
