Louisville, Ky. - Western Kentucky used a 14-6 run to pull away from Louisville in the final five minutes to win 94-86 in Freedom Hall on Saturday night. The Hilltoppers' Natalie Powers led all scorers with 23 points while Louisville's Tiana Ford scored a career-high 22 points.
"I hope this is a wake-up call tonight," said head coach Martin Clapp. "They executed what they needed to and kept possession of the ball. We didn't take care of the basketball and we didn't defend and you are not going to win any games if you continue to play like that."
Western Kentucky led by as many as 10 early in the second half. The Cards used a 13-4 run to go up 71-70 with 8:57 remaining. The Hilltoppers regained the lead on the next possession until the Cardinals tied it at 80 with a three-pointer from Sara Nord. But then the Hilltoppers went on the run to stop a patented Cardinal comeback.
The Cardinals take an 11 day hiatus until they host Coppin State on Dec. 12 at 5:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
