Kent State Edges Field Hockey 3-2 in Overtime

Kent State's Arlette van Cleeff's overtime goal gave the Golden Flashes a 3-2 win over the University of Louisville in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Championship on Saturday at Trager Stadium. It was the second overtime game of the day in the MAC semifinals.
The third-seeded Cardinals scored on a penalty corner midway through the first half as Olivia Netzler connected on an assist from Joanie Frame to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
Kent State responded when Helen Jerdan scored on a penalty corner with assists from van Cleeff and Rebecca Rahaim to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:18 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Kent State pulled ahead 2-1 on another penalty corner, with Jerdan scoring her second goal of the game off of assists from van Cleeff and Rahaim at the 20:26 mark.
Louisville's Elisa Eshelman tied the game ten minutes later, when she tipped in a feed from Susan Sattazahn with 10:48 remaining in regulation. The teams played out the remainder of the game, forcing sudden- victory overtime.
Van Cleeff's goal came on a Kent State penalty corner just 1:25 into the overtime period. This time Jerdan fed a pass to van Cleeff, who sent a shot into the left side of the cage for the 3-2 win.
The Golden Flashes outshot Louisville 12-9 and held a 12-8 penalty corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey had five saves in the game, while Kent State's Jodi Lume had four stops on the day. Kent State's Jerdan finished the game with two goals and an assist, while van Cleeff had two assists and the game-winning goal.
Louisville falls to 16-5.
The second-seeded Golden Flashes (13-6) will play top-seeded Ohio University (15-4) in the finals on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Ohio had defeated Ball State 1-0 in the first game of the semifinals.
