
Volleyball Hosts Georgia Tech in NCAA Championship Tournament

LOUISVILLE, KY -- The University of Louisville volleyball team will host Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament, 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at the Kentucky International Convention Center. The No. 12-ranked University of the Pacific will square off against Alabama A&M at 6 p.m. in the other part of the bracket to be played in Louisville.
Louisville, 25-6, is making its fourth straight NCAA Appearance and 12th overall (1982-90-91-92-93-94-95-96-98-99-2000-01). The Cardinals lost to Michigan State at Arizona in the first round last year and are 5-11 all-time in the NCAAs.
Georgia Tech is 19-7. The two teams only have a single common opponent in Utah. The Cardinals swept the Utes 3-0 and Georgia Tech lost 3-0. Tech is making its fourth appearance.
Pacific, a two-time national champion (1985, 1986) is 26-7. Alabama A&M is making its second NCAA appearance and is the SWAC automatic qualifier and posts a 20-8 record.
"We are very excited to be hosting," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Now we must focus on on our game to push through these first rounds and move on to the next level. It will take our best volleyball. We are talented at every position just not very deep. That means everyone has to have their best game and leave everything on the court."
Tickets for Friday's session (at 6 and 8 p.m.) will be $10 for adults, $6 for students with ID and $4 for children. Saturday's match will be $6 for adults, $5 for students and $2 for children. Match time for Saturday is 4 p.m. Tickets go on sale at the U of L ticket office on Wednesday.
"When we heard we were hosting we jumped up and cheered like crazy," said Emily Roberson, senior co-captain. "Our fans are the best and they are Louisville volleyball. It is awesome to know they are cheering and going wild for us."
Thirty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 33 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and placed within four regions. The teams tabbed as the top seeds were Long Beach State University, University of Nebraska, Stanford University and University of Southern California.Four teams, University of the Pacific (California), Pennsylvania State University, Stanford and University of California, Santa Barbara, have earned bids to all 21 championships.
