LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Anthony Floyd, a junior all-American defensive back from Youngstown, Ohio, was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week after helping to lead Louisville past conference rival Houston, 34-10, on Saturday.
Pressed into action three weeks ago due to an injury to Deion Branch, Floyd sure looked like a regular on special teams as his 52-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the second quarter broke open a 10-7 game and ignited a decisive 24-0 run by the Cardinals. The talented safety also notched six tackles and broke up a pass as Louisville limited Houston to only 157 yards in the air, nearly a 100 yards below its season average (252.7).
Floyd, who tied for the Division I-A national lead with 10 interceptions in 2000, ranks fourth on the Cardinals this season with 80 tackles. The heady defensive back has also notched three interceptions for a defense which ranks No. 7 nationally in scoring defense (14.20 ppg.) and No. 17 nationally in turnover margin (+.80).
This marks the sixth time a Cardinal has claimed conference honors this year. Previous winners were Michael Brown (defensive), Dewayne White (defensive), Wade Tydlacka (special teams) and Dave Ragone (offensive) twice.
