Louisville Notes
WR Arnold Jackson caught a pass in his 36th consecutive game tonight, the longest active streak in the nation.
This was Louisville's second overtime contest. The Cardinals fell 59-52 to Army last season in a double overtime game on Oct. 7, 1999.
RB Tony Stallings, an Conference USA All-Freshman choice as a linebacker, gained 144 yards on 15 carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown.
Today's Cardinal victory moves the series to a 9-4 Kentucky lead, but Louisville holds a 4-3 edge since the series was renewed in 1994.
This was the closest game (six points) in the series since a 13-10 Louisville victory on Sept. 2, 1995. The last four games between the two schools have been by a margin of 14 or more points.
Louisville WR Arnold Jackson's seven catches for 69 yards today gives him 242 career receptions, just 57 shy of breaking Nevada's Trevor Insley's NCAA Division IA mark of 298 career receptions. Jackson, who has 244 career receptions, caught a school and Conference USA record 101 passes in 1999.
There was a one hour, 12 minute delay in the game due to lightning. With 8:11 remaining in the third quarter and Kentucky leading 19-14, officials determined that there was lightning in the area and conditions were unsafe to continue at that time. Officials determined shortly before 10 p.m. that the weather front had moved through and that the game would resume in 30 minutes to allow for team warm-up and the crowd to return to their seats.
The crowd of 42,515 was was the second largest ever in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, surpassed only by the 42,643 that witnessed the stadium opening contest against Kentucky on Sept. 5, 1998. U of L's largest home crowd last season was 41,826 for the Conference USA championship game against Southern Mississippi on Nov. 20, 1999.
Louisville was presented with the Governor's Cup trophy following the game, a traveling award presented tonight by Governor Paul Patton and Kroger, which sponsored the trophy and provides $10,000 in scholarships to each school annually.
Louisville unveiled a new Cardinal Bird mascot at today's game with a bigger chest, leaner body, broader wings and longer leggings.
