VERSAILLES, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2000 seasons Friday afternoon in a tri-meet at Woodford County Park in Versailles, Ky.
The Cardinals finished third behind host Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky in both races.
"This really was not a bad start for us," said U of L head coach Gene Weis. "We do not bring our team in early for training like the others. We still have a ways to go in the season and we expect to be much better prepared by mid-October and certainly by conference time."
Kelly Thornton led the women with a time of 12:47.0 to finish seventh out of 27 runners. Alicia Cavender (12:48.2), Marea Ingwersen (12:50.0) and Kim Shore (13:02.0) placed ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.
"The women in particular will show much better in time," said Weis. "Kelly, Alicia and Marea looked good, while Kim struggled a bit after a fast early mile with an asthmatic flare up."
Rounding out the Cardinal finishers were Jessica Dietrich (14th), Beth Wendt (16th), Nicole Koenig (18th), Emily Daunhauer (19th) and Laura Biros (24th).
On the men's side, Curtis Persinger (17:15.0) and Dustin Perkins (17:20.0) placed ninth and 10th to lead the Cards. Justin Banks (14th), Tim Franxman (16th), Mike Horan (17th) and Josh Gentry (19th) all finished among the top 20 in the race.
"Curtis looked very good for a first-year runner," said Weis. "He'll be very good in time."
The Cards return to action next Saturday when they travel to Murray, Ky., for the Murray State Racer Invite.
