LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville tennis player Hazuan Hizan, a native of Malaysia, returned there to represent his country in the first round of the Davis Cup and helped spark his team to a 3-2 win over Iran. The win marked Malaysia's first victory over Iran.
After losing the first match to Iran's Raziani Ramin in the qualifier, Hizan came back to play on the final day with the scored tied at two and provided the winning point when he beat Akbar Taheri 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in a 90-minute match.
Hizan was also responsible for Malaysia's win over Hong Kong last year, which enabled Malaysia to be promoted from Group 3 to Group 2.
"I came back from the States for the Davis Cup and I'm glad I made that trip. It was worth the effort," said Hazuan. "Playing at home was great. Those three days really gave me a lot of confidence."
Malaysia will meet Indonesia in the second round of the Davis Cup in April 7-9.
"We're extremely proud of Hazuan's clutch and emotional performance at the Davis Cup," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "The Malaysian community is ecstatic and proud of him, but I'm also glad to have him back in Louisville and playing for us now."
Hizan has compiled a 9-6 singles record at U of L and a 7-6 record in doubles. He returned to Louisville in time to accompany the U of L tennis team to Michigan State, where the No. 53 ranked Cards defeated the Spartans 5-2 Saturday. Louisville plays host to No. 6 SMU today at 5:00 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
