LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head football coach John L. Smith announced today the hiring of former Montana State offensive coordinator Jim McElwain (pronounced MACK-el-wain) as the Cardinals' wide receiver coach. McElwain replaced Paul Petrino who was recently named quarterbacks coach at Southern Mississippi.
"Jim is a tremendous acquisition for us as our wide receivers coach," said Smith. "He is familiar with our system and our staff. Adding him to the staff will allow us to continue getting better without missing a beat."
McElwain joins U of L after five seasons as the offensive coordinator at Montana State. In addition to playcalling duties for the Bobcats, McElwain tutored the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
A 1984 graduate of Eastern Washington University, McElwain coached 10 seasons at his alma mater helping guide the Eagles to a 1992 Big Sky Championship and a pair of NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances. At EWU, McElwain coached quarterbacks and wide receivers while adding other administrative duties.
A native of Montana, McElwain played quarterback at EWU in the early '80s while receiving his bachelor's degree in education.
