LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville honored the jersey of graduating senior quarterback Chris Redman Saturday afternoon as part of Senior Day ceremonies. The honored jersey ceremony took place just prior to kickoff of the Cardinals' Conference USA showdown with Southern Miss at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
Redman entered his final collegiate regular season game as the NCAA Division I-A all-time leader in passes attempted and completed while currently standing third on the all-time yardage charts.
Earlier this season, Redman became just the second quarterback in NCAA I-A history to throw for more than 12,000 yards in a career joining former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. The duo was joined a week ago by Louisiana Tech signalcaller Tim Rattay.
For his career, the third-generation Cardinal has thrown for 12,196 yards while completing 1,007 of 1,637 passes. Redman has tossed 82 touchdowns in his storied career including 31 to longtime teammate Ibn Green.
The duo entered the USM game just two touchdowns shy of tying the NCAA record as the most prolific quarterback / receiver TD combination in major college football history.
Redman, who owns virtually every passing record in U of L gridiron history, prepped under his father, Bob, at local Male High School where the he earned Parade National Player of the Year honors. Redman threw for 3,752 yards and a then-national record 57 touchdowns as a senior in 1994.
Among his many accomplishments, Redman has thrown for 300 or more yards on 23 occasions including a school and Conference USA record 592-yard performance in 1998 versus East Carolina. He completed 44 of 56 throws on that afternoon for a record six TDs while the above-mentioned 592 yards still stands as the 10th-highest single-game showing in NCAA I-A history.
Redman's jersey joins the uniforms of former Cardinal greats Lenny Lyles, Ernie Green, Frank Minnifield, Doug Buffone and Tom Jackson along the northwest facade of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The six jerseys join the uniform of former Cardinal quarterback Johnny Unitas on the facade.
Unitas' accomplishments at U of L and in the NFL warranted his No. 16 be retired by the University and unavailable for future Cardinals to wear.
