LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville sophomores Quintin Bailey and Caleb Gervin have been suspended from the Cardinal basketball team for the 2000-2001 season for a violation of team rules, according to Head Coach Denny Crum.
"Quintin and Caleb were both found in violation of NCAA eligibility rules," said Crum. "We are addressing the matter internally, including their future status with our team, and will have no further comment on the issue."
A walk-on swingman from Louisville Iroquois High School, Bailey led Cardinal reserves with a 6.1 scoring average last season, scoring five or more points on 19 occasions. Gervin averaged 2.6 points, appearing as a reserve guard in 20 games.
Statement from Quintin Bailey
"I put myself in a situation that has affected my life, and now I have to pay for it," said Bailey. "I made a mistake that won't happen again. I'll use the year to concentrate on my academic studies and do all in my power to be reinstated to our team. I want to let everyone know that I am sorry for my actions."
Statement from Caleb Gervin
"We all make mistakes in our lives," said Gervin. "I made one by using marijuana and it will not happen again. I made a bad decision and now have to suffer the consequences. I hope for the youth this can be a learning experience by following all the rules. I want to apologize to my family, teammates, coaches and fans who have been supportive of me."
