LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Marques Maybin hit a driving layup with five seconds remaining as Louisville held off Southern Mississippi 69-67 Saturday.
Tied at 67 with time running out, freshman point guard Reece Gaines drove into the lane and found a wide-open Maybin on the baseline for the game winner.
Southern Mississippi's Earl Flowers drove the length of the floor but could not get a shot off as time expired.
Maybin scored eight of his team-high 16 points over the final 3:35 as the Cardinals (10-3, 2-0 Conference USA) held off the late charge to win their fifth consecutive game.
Gaines tied a career-high with 12 points and Tony Williams added 11 for Louisville.
David Wall scored 31 points, including 6-of-10 3-pointers, and Flowers added 10 for the Golden Eagles (10-3, 1-1).
Louisville, winner of 10 of its last 11 games, shot only 43 percent from the field but forced 21 turnovers, leading to 24 points. The Cardinals also made 18-of-22 free throws as the teams combined to shoot 51 in the game.
Trailing 61-53, Wall scored seven consecutive points to cut the margin to only one with 4:06 to play. But three straight baskets by Maybin, including a thundering alley-oop from Williams, put the Cardinals ahead 67-61 with 1:56 remaining.
A 6-0 Golden Eagle run, capped by a Mel Cauthen 3-pointer with 34 seconds to play, tied the score at 67 and set up the dramatic finish.
Southern Mississippi, which had beaten the Cardinals each of the past two seasons, outrebounded Louisville 35-28 but scored only 12 second-chance points to the Cardinals' 11.
The Cardinals' bench also excelled for the second straight game, scoring 22 points. The Golden Eagles' reserves scored 12 points.
Louisville, which dominated No. 18 Utah 75-55 on Thursday, missed 10 of its first 11 shots then rebounded to hit 12 of the next 16 to take a 38-24 lead with 2:28 to play in the half.
Southern Miss finished the half with a 9-3 run to cut the margin to 41-33 at halftime.
