INDIANAPOLIS - University of Louisville head coach Denny Crum was honored today as the recipient of the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award at the annual National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) press conference held during the NCAA Final Four. Crum received the award for his dedication and commitment to fighting cancer through Coaches vs. Cancer. Coaches vs. Cancer was founded in 1993 by the NABC and the American Cancer Society.
A Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award winner is selected by the Coaches Council - Coaches vs. Cancer's governing body - and is based on a coach's fund-raising total, level of participation, number of years involved, and leadership displayed with Coaches vs. Cancer fund-raising and educational activities to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Crum, who has lost friends and family members to cancer, including his father, has made it a personal goal to make Coaches vs. Cancer a success across the country. Crum realizes he is not alone with this problem and is doing his part to help others who have been touched by cancer.
"I've been affected by cancer directly," said Crum. "If I just had one particular thing I could support, it would probably be cancer research because that disease has had the most direct affect on me. Very few people in this country haven't been affected either directly or indirectly by cancer in their family, and mine is no exception."
In his sixth season as a member of Coaches vs. Cancer, Crum has been actively involved in various fund-raising, educational and promotional activities to benefit research, patient services, advocacy, and prevention education of the American Cancer Society.
