LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Leroy Davis, a 6-4, 200-pound guard from Southern Union Community College in Wadley, Ala., has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his basketball playing career at the University of Louisville.
Davis averaged 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists last season as the only freshman starter for Southern Union, which produced a 23-5 record and reached the semifinals of the regional tournament. He shot 55 percent from the field, including 42.9 percent from the three-point line, and hit 74.2 percent of his free throws.
"Leroy is a quality shooter and very athletic," said U of L Basketball Coach Denny Crum. "He's in the mold of (former U of L and NBA guard) Greg Minor. He's a versatile player with solid basketball skills, a good defender and plays hard. He's played against good competition, playing on a team with a chance to reach the national junior college championship."
"Leroy's combination of shooting ability and athleticism make him very special," said Southern Union Coach Ron Radford. "He's a very good rebounder from the guard position and is a good defender. He knows how to play the game and plays hard every time he takes the court."
Davis was the only freshman honored on the All-Region 22 junior college team last season. He would join a junior class at U of L that would include Reece Gaines, Hajj Turner and potentially Erik Brown.
Mike Mitchell of Midwest Scouting Service called Davis a "big-time two-guard prospect. He's a terrific raw talent and has an excellent three-point shot. He plays hard at both ends."
In just 22 minutes of action in Southern Union's 91-54 decisive victory over Alabama Southern Tuesday night (Nov. 7), Davis had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, hitting five-of-seven shots from the field.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., he had narrowed his choices to Alabama, Ohio State and UAB before signing with the Cardinals.
Davis is the third newcomer to sign with the Cardinals during the November signing period, joining 6-6 guard/forward Dennis Coutee of Jeffersonville (Ind.) High School and stellar 6-2 guard Carlos Hurt of Moore High School in Louisville.
