Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated the Reebok Lady Stars 94-83 tonight in Freedom Hall. Four of the five Louisville starters scored in double-figures. They were led by junior center Shamika Ingram with 16 points.
"I was very pleased for our first game," said head coach Martin Clapp. "I saw a lot of positives and people really stepped up and scored tonight."
Louisville jumped out to a quick lead early, leading 21-9 in the first eight minutes. In the final three minutes of the first half, the Lady Stars cut away the Cardinal lead at the free throw line. The Lady Stars hit seven of eight free throws to cut the lead to 41-37 with two minutes left in the half.
Indiana Fever star Monica Maxwell drilled two three-pointers in the final minute to knot the score at 43. Louisville junior Kara Kessans hit a jump shot in the final seconds to give the Cardinals a 45-43 lead at the half.
The game stayed close at the start of the second half until the Cardinals began to pull away 62-61 with 11:46 left to play. Louisville built the lead up to 10 with 5:36 remaining and never looked back.
Freshman point guard Sara Nord put in an impressive performance with 12 points and 12 assists. Kara Kessans scored 15 points while sophomore Carol Brown added 10 points and lead the team on the boards with 14 rebounds.
Monica Maxwell led the Lady Stars with 21 points, hitting five three-pointers. Former Louisville player Alison Bass was the second leading scorer with 14 points and lead the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
Louisville outrebounded the Lady Stars 51-38.
"We had the height and took advantage of it on the boards," said Clapp. "Our players were just glad to get a chance to play against someone else. They had a chance to see what they need to work on to get better."
Louisville will be in action again on Wednesday, Nov. 8 as they take on Finland at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
