Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Tapiolan Honka 81-37 tonight in Cardinal Arena. Junior guard Kara Kessans led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
" We weren't mentally ready to play tonight," said head coach Martin Clapp. "We saw some weaknesses tonight and we are a long way away from being able to play teams like UC-Santa Barbara and Nebraska. But luckily we have a week to practice to get ready."
The Cardinals started out the first half with very sloppy play, missing their first six shots. Louisville settled down and began to hit some shots leading 40-14 at the half.
Louisville forced Tapiolan Honka into 14 turnovers in the first half. The Cardinals shot just 45 percent from the foul line in the first half and just 31.8 percent from the field.
Louisville improved their play in the second half, hitting 88.9 percent from the free throw line and 44.1 percent from the field. Junior Janelle Antoine hit the boards hard in the second half, pulling down seven of her 11 rebounds.
Antoine and freshman Sara Nord both scored double figures with Antoine scoring 12 points and Nord scoring 13. Nord led the team hitting three of six from behind the arc.
Antoine led the team with 11 rebounds and Kessans pulled down 10 boards.
The Cardinals will begin the regular season on the road next week on Nov. 17. Louisville will face UC-Santa Barbara in the first round of the Nebraska Time Warner Cable Classic at 6:35 EST.
