
Volleyball Beats Charlotte 3-1

CHARLOTTE -- Kelly McClain had 16 kills and four blocks to lead the Cardinals to a 15-6, 11-15, 15-5, 15-5 win over UNC Charlotte in Conference USA volleyball action in Charlotte.
The Cardinals' winning streak now runs to 10 straight and they have not lost a game in the month of October since 1998. U of L is 17-6 overall and 9-3 in Conference USA. UNCC drops to 11-15 and 5-8 in the league.
"It was senior night for UNCC's best two players and that can be an emotional advantage for a team," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Fortunately, our hitting and blocking stayed sharp."
Louisville had nine aces and outblocked Charlotte 11-5. The 49ers committed 13 service errrors.
The first game stayed close in the early going, with the 49ers tying at three on a kill by senior setter Ozlem Ozkan. Louisville ran off seven straight points to go up 10-3. After a three point run by Charlotte, the Cardinals closed out the game with a 5-0 run that was sparked by an ace by Sarah Drury.
The Niners used two runs to win the second game. After tying at five, the 49ers ran off six straight points that featured two kills by Christy Galvin and an ace by Abra Geissler. Louisville didn't go down without a fight. With Charlotte at game point 14-7, the Cardinals managed to score four points on a pair of Charlotte hitting errors and a kill and a block by Anastasia Zaitseva. However it was too little, too late as Ezra Akgun scored the game point on a cross court shot.
Louisville rebounded and took a 7-2 lead in the third game. The 49ers scored a pair but then let the Cardinals go on a six unanswered point run that had four points coming on Charlotte errors to fall to 13-2. Charlotte scored three points but the Cardinals got to game point and a Bing Sun kill ended the game. 15-5.
In the fourth game, Louisville powered to a 11-1 lead including four Cardinal aces with two apiece by Lesley Drury and Jing Ding. The 49ers went on a brief 4-1 run. A kill by Sonja Percan took the Cards to game point and then a UNCC miss ended the match.
Louisville had two other players with double digit kills with Bing Sun adding 15 and Anastasia Zaitseva pitching in 14.
