
Cressoni, Onofrei Each Win Singles Flight at Louisville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team started off the fall season by hosting seven teams for the Louisville Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in a three-day tournament.Â
Louisville was victorious in both of the singles flights as senior Pedro Cressoni won the Louisville Red bracket and sophomore Matei Onofrei claimed victory in the Louisville Black bracket.Â
The Cards went 13-3 in singles over the weekend while posting a 3-2 record in doubles.Â
Friday
The first day of the Louisville Invitational was a success for the Cards as all four singles participants won in straight sets and moved on to the quarterfinals in their respective brackets.Â
The competition started off with doubles play where Louisville went 2-2. Cardinals duo Russell Lokko and Louis Chusseau claimed the lone doubles victory by a score of 8-4, but unfortunately fell to Eastern Kentucky's pair of Fernando Bulnes Garrorena and Filip Avdeev in a tight 8-6 match during the following round.Â
Cressoni and Onofrei fell in the first match as a duo, but bounced back in their consolation match by defeating Xavier's Samuel Frizelle and Max Pettingell 8-4.
Playing in the Louisville Red bracket, Cressoni was the first Cardinal to finish in singles, claiming a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over the University of Alabama-Birmingham's Conor Flynn.Â
In the same flight, returning junior Lokko battled Xavier's Frizelle and claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory to advance in his bracket.Â
Chusseau got the second flight of the day started with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Xavier's Bode Campbell.Â
Onofrei helped cap off Louisville's singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win over UAB's Axel Frechet to also advance to the quarterfinals of the Louisville Black bracket.Â
SaturdayÂ
Day two featured only singles competition where the Cards went 6-2 on the day.Â
Cressoni claimed the first victory for Lousiville by defeating Bellarmine's Matthew Nice 6-3, 6-1. He advanced to the final of the Louisville Red bracket by overcoming Belmont's Sabi Roi by a score of 6-3, 6-2.Â
Onofrei played EKU's Avdeev in his morning match and secured a swift 6-1, 6-4 win. In his second match of the day, the sophomore faced off in a heated competition against Belmont's Stefan Vedovelli and took the victory in straight sets by a score of 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the Louisville Black bracket's finals.Â
Also playing in the Louisville Black bracket, Chusseau defeated UAB player Tomas Tischner, 6-3, 6-3. In his second match of the day, EKU's Adrian Contreras attempted to rally back from four games behind in the first set, but Louis was able to hold on and claim a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to move to the finals.Â
Lokko battled hard on the day, but unfortunately fell in both of his matches in tight tiebreak sets. In the quarterfinals, he fell to EKU's Nino Pinheiro 4-6, 6-3, 6-10 and then dropped his consolation match 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 6-10.Â
Sunday
Lokko and Chusseau kicked off the final day with a strong 6-3 doubles victory over Xavier duo Lukas Grossman and Campbell.
Playing in the final of the Louisville Red bracket, Cressoni defeated EKU's Nuno Pinheiro in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-4 to claim his first tournament flight as a Cardinal.
The final of the Louisville Black bracket was a battle of the Cardinals, as newcomers Onofrei and Chusseau went head-to-head. Chusseau got out to an early one-set lead, but Onofrei rallied back to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 and take home the flight victory.Â
Lokko also played a match in the morning where he defeated Tennessee's Piotr Siekanowicz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
