Louisville earns a strong 7-0 victory over USI after falling 4-2 to No. 11 Duke
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team ended the night on a high with a 7-0 victory over Southern Indiana after falling 4-2 to No. 11 Duke during the morning match of their Sunday doubleheader.Â
No. 11 Duke 4, Louisville 2
No. 11 Duke (11-3, 4-0 ACC) started off doubles competition hot with a 6-0 win on Court 3, but the Cards were able to battle head-to-head with the ranked Blue Devils. Â
Louisville's (6-10, 0-4 ACC) tandem of Andre' Steinbach and Kosuke Nakanishi battled on Court 1to defeat No. 71 Duke pair of Cooper Williams and Andreja Petrovic, 6-4.Â
The Cardinals pair of Hamza El Amine and Enrique Peña battled back-and-forth against Duke's duo of Connor Krug and Theo Winegar and went into a tiebreaker, but the duo dropped the heart breaker 7-6 (7-3).
Junior Will Mayew was the first player to finish in singles competition, defeating C. Krug 6-1, 6-3 and tying the score at 1-1.Â
Duke then won the next two points, taking down Louisville's four then five courts.Â
Natan Rodrigues earned a hard-fought victory on Court 1, defeating Petrovic in two sets with a score of 7-5, 6-2.Â
Second-year Piet Steveker fought until the end before dropping Court 6, 6-4, 7-5 to Duke's Saahith Jayaraman.Â
Steinbach rallied back and was the only court to go into three sets, but the match was abandoned 3-6, 6-3, 4-1.
Louisville 7, Southern Indiana 0
The Cards started off the second match strong in doubles competition. Peña and Russell Lokko were the first to finish, defeating Adam Koon and Mathys Bove 6-2 on Court 3. Nakanishi and Steveker clinched the point for Louisville with a 6-2 victory on Court 1 seconds before Rodrigues and Mayew claimed a 6-2 victory on Court 2.Â
Lokko was dominant in singles competition, defeating Bryce Rothschild and earning a double bagel with a score of 6-0, 6-0 on Court 6.Â
Peña finished shortly behind him with a 6-0, 6-2 victory on Court 5 before Nakanishi clinched the match on Court 2 with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-2 win.Â
After claiming a victory in the competition, Louisville decided to play on and secured wins on all three of the final courts. El Amine took home a 6-1, 6-2 win while Steinbach battled for a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court 1. Steveker rounded out the competition with a battle of his own after he defeated Gillespie on Court 4 to end the night.
The Cards will travel to the west coast this week to face Cal on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. E.T. and Stanford on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.Â
