Avendaño, El Amine take singles victories, but Cards fall short
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team (5-9, 0-3 ACC) fell short against fellow ACC opponent North Carolina (8-4, 2-1 ACC) with a final score of 4-3 on Friday evening.
The Cards showed strong in doubles, claiming two matches to clinch the point and take a 1-0 lead over the Tar Heels. Enrique Peña and Hazma El Amine won the first match of the afternoon on Court 3 with a 6-3 victory over UNC's Diego Jarry and Anthony Wright. Soon after, Andre' Steinbach and Kosuke Nakanishi defeated Vladislav Melnic and Chris Xu, 6-2 on Court 1 to clinch the doubles point for Louisville.
Despite a thrilling tiebreaker in the first set, Nakanishi fell 6-6 (9-7), 6-2 to UNC's Wright on Court 4.
El Amine then pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nick Mangiapane on Court 6 to give the Cards a 2-1 lead before UNC tied the score on Court 3 when Xu defeated Steinbach 6-4, 7-5.
Miguel Avendaño rallied on Court 5 after a second set loss to overtake the lead, going 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 against Jarry.
Junior Will Mayew lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Constantinos Djakouris on Court 2. Shortly after, UNC secured the victory as Melnic defeated Natan Rodrigues on Court 1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Louisville will return to Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for a doubleheader against Duke and Southern Indiana on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 11 a.m.
