Louisville outscored Georgia Tech 37-23 in the first half
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's basketball team (12-5, 5-1 ACC) rode a dominant first half to a 69-60 victory over #13 Georgia Tech (15-2, 3-2 ACC) Sunday evening at the KFC Yum! Center. With the win over the Yellow Jackets, the Cards picked up their first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Tajianna Roberts led the charge for the Cards, finishing with 16 points and scoring 12 in the second half. Ja'Leah Williams added 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Nyla Harris was the third Card in double figures, scoring 11 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field. As a team, Louisville forced 16 turnovers and outrebounded Georgia Tech 31-24, handing the Yellow Jackets their second consecutive loss.
After trailing 5-0 to begin the game, the Cards scored on their next four field goal attempts. Each basket came from a different Cardinal. The Yellow Jackets answered back with a 6-2 run to lead 13-9 going into the first media timeout. Capping a short Louisville run, Williams scored off of an offensive rebound to put the Cards up 14-13, a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. A 9-0 run to end the first gave Louisville an 18-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Jayda Curry opened the scoring in the second with a three from the top of the key to give Louisville a 21-13 lead, its biggest of the evening to that point. Both teams caught fire on offense in the middle of the quarter, with the Cards scoring on four of five field goal attempts to match three straight by the Yellow Jackets. Harris scored on a fast break with just over two minutes remaining to give Louisville its first double-digit lead of the evening. The Cards held Georgia Tech to just one point in the final four and a half minutes of the half to take a 37-23 lead into the break.
Louisville finished the first half 15-for-25 (60 percent) from the field, including 7-for-10 (70 percent) in the second quarter, while holding Georgia Tech to a season-low 23 first half points.
The Cards weathered a rough third quarter to hold onto a double digit lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Louisville shot just 5-for-15 (33 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter, allowing Georgia Tech to get within five with less than two minutes left. A Williams 15-foot baseline jumper and subsequent Georgia Tech turnover with under a minute sealed the game for Louisville. The Cards held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal in the final 4:13 of the game to pull out a 69-60 victory.
Louisville will conclude its two-game homestand with a matchup against Syracuse on Thursday, January 16 at the KFC Yum! Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be available for streaming on ACC Network Extra.
