Cardinals Fresh Tight End Platoon Ready to Lead 2024 Offense
August 29, 2024 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brian Brohm, the University of Louisville offensive coordinator is optimistic about the efforts made in the offseason to strengthen the offensive unit, specifically at tight end.
"We made a concerted effort in the offseason to go out and get some tight ends that could do some different things to give us some depth," Brian Brohm said. "We have some depth there and we have some athleticism."
Head Coach Jeff Brohm, who is known to use his tight ends in a versatile manner, is eager to see how far the fresh squad can take the Cardinals offense in the 2024 season.
"We want this position to be a big part of the offense," Jeff Brohm said, "It's important between receiving and catching the ball between the hashes, stretching the field, and blocking, that they all can do that."
Mark Redman, Izayah Cummings, and Jaleel Skinner – transfers out of San Diego State, Kentucky, and Miami, respectively – along with returners Nate Kurisky and Jamari Johnson, are the top names to look out for in the rotation.
Last year, the Louisville tight ends had a total of 35 catches, 377 yards, and five touchdowns.
Kurisky was a major contributor in the 2023 season as a redshirt freshman with 18 catches, 141 yards, and two touchdowns. He is looking to add to those numbers this season.
Brian Brohm trusts he has, "a deep group of weapons to choose from at that position now as opposed to a year ago where we couldn't focus the offense as much on the tight ends."
Within Brian Brohm's tight end arsenal, Redman is a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection. At San Diego State, Redman had 60 catches, 646 yards and five touchdowns in his career which highlights the impact he looks to make at UofL.
"Our offense uses the tight end quite a bit and if you look at the history of our offense we have put a number of guys in the national football league because we use the tight end in a numbers of ways they have to be very versatile," Brian Brohm said.
When asked about 4-star recruit out of California Johnson, Brian Brohm added "he has huge up side, talent and has done a really good job developing. We are looking forward to seeing it come out on the field."
Brian Brohm and his offense are looking forward to the Cardinals season opener on Aug. 31 vs. Austin Peay at L&N Federal Credit Union stadium at 12 p.m. ET.
