LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville is just three weeks away from the start of fall camp, and UofL head coach provided an update on the team heading into his second season with the program.
Brohm gave an update on three key members of the team in safety M.J. Griffin, wide receiver Ja'Corey Brooks and offensive lineman Renato Brown, who are all expected to be ready to compete when the Cardinals start fall camp toward the end of the month.Â
"Well, those are very good players and we're excited about the future with them," Brohm said on Monday.
Brown, a starter in the first six games, suffered a season-ending knee injury during pregame warmups at Pittsburgh on Oct. 14. Brown, who had started 40 games during his career, had surgery on his left knee, and missed the rest of the 2023 campaign.Â
"Unfortunately, he got hurt in pregame warmups in the Pitt game, we lost him," Brohm said. "He's getting close to 100 percent. I think by the time we get to fall camp he will be there but he still has a little ways to go. But he's doing a good job and is a valuable piece (to the roster)."
Brown is one of the more experienced offensive linemen on the team and will be a welcome addition back to the lineup this fall.Â
Griffin will main secondary players this season after he suffered a torn ACL in fall camp a year ago and missed the entire season.Â
"He is fully healed and recovered," Brohm said. "He's had a great summer and we are looking forward to him having a great year.
"He's a great leader and I think will do a great job."
An Alabama transfer, Brooks has been dealing with a shoulder injury from last season and missed spring ball. However, Brooks is healthy and is currently going through summer drills..
"He was limited in the spring but he's full speed now," Brohm said. "Obviously we're protecting him as well, but he's full speed. He's looking good.
"He needs to be a big part of our offense."
Brooks was an impact player for the Crimson Tide during his previous seasons with the program. He had 57 catches and 896 passing yards and 10 touchdowns during his career at Alabama. As a freshman, he appeared in all 15 games. He had 15 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns with all of his receptions and yards coming across the final six games of his rookie campaign.
In 2022, Brooks had 39 catches for 674 receiving and was tied for third in the SEC with eight touchdowns.
The Cardinals are scheduled to open camp toward the end of July in preparation for the Aug. 31 opener against Austin Peay.
