Cardinals Open Home Slate Against Southern Indiana
November 07, 2024 | Women's Basketball
This will be the first of 13 home games at the KFC Yum! Center
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's basketball team is back in the states and ready to open the home slate at the KFC Yum! Center this season. Louisville is set to host Southern Indiana on Friday night for its first of 13 home games this season. The Cards and Screaming Eagles will square off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
The Cardinals are 15-2 all-time in home openers under head coach Jeff Walz. Since the KFC Yum! Center opened in 2010, the Cardinals are 12-2 in openers at the Yum! Center. The Cardinals have won each of their last eight home openers, dating back to the 2015-16 season.
In the season opener, freshman Tajianna Roberts wasted no time making a big impact. She led both teams with 21 points and made four three-pointers over 36 minutes and did not commit a single turnover. She is the first Louisville freshman since the 2020 season to score 20 or more points in their collegiate debut.
Another newcomer to make an impact was transfer Ja'Leah Williams. Playing in her 100th collegiate game after coming over from Miami, she set a career high with nine assists to go with a team-best four steals and seven rebounds and she scored in double figures with 11 points. The nine assists were the most by a Louisville player since Mykasa Robinson had 10 against Wake Forest on March 3, 2023.

ABOUT THE SCREAMING EAGLES
Southern Indiana comes into Friday's matchup with a 1-0 record after a 100-49 opening night victory over Brescia. USI had five players score in double figures and never trailed in the win. The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 2023-24 campaign where they went 25-7 overall, 17-1 in conference play and won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. It was only USI's third year as they are transitioning to Division I and therefore they were ineligible to participate in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. USI returns four of their five starters from the OVC Championship Game, including last year's leading scorer Vanessa Shafford (13.6). The Screaming Eagles return the top-three scorers from last season including Shafford, Meredith Raley (12.2) and Madison Webb (10.8). Shafford was the team's leading rebounder last year (7.7) and Webb had a team-best 3.5 assists per game.
