November 26, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's tennis coach Mark Beckham announces the commitment of Lucia Gallegos from San Jos, Costa Rica.
Gallegos is currently the highest ranked Under-18 player in Costa Rica and represented her country in the Billie Jean King Cup and ascended to the Americas III Promotional Playoff. She went 5-0 in Group Play with key wins versus Jamaica and El Salvador.
Gallegos also ranks No. 2 in singles and No. 1 in doubles for Costa Rica's national team. She also competed in the Central American and Caribbean games representing Costa Rica.
She is currently ranked in the Top 600 in the world in ITF Juniors with a ranking as high as 511 during the month of May. Gallegos currently holds a 15-11 record in 2024, with majority of her wins coming on hard court.
"I am excited to welcome Lucia Gallegos to Louisville Women's Tennis," said Beckham. "Breaunna and I are obviously excited about her tennis potential but even more so about the quality of person she is. She is very appreciative of what she will receive here from Louisville and wants to work as hard as she can to be a very good tennis player.
She has a complete game with no real weakness, she just needs to be around a lot of good players all the time which she doesn't have in Costa Rica. Another really big asset for Lucia is that she has experience already in a team setting. She has played a lot for her National Team and a lot of young tennis players don't have that experience, but it is really valuable when you are joining a college team. College tennis is a different animal and think she is going to thrive in this environment."
