Louisville was shut out for the first time this season in the loss.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at No. 19 NC State on Sunday evening in Raleigh, N.C.
Louisville (6-5-4, 0-4-3 ACC) was shut out for the first time this season. All five of the Cardinals' losses this year have been by one goal, including three against ranked opponents.
Sunday's match got off to a fast start with Michael Lee getting an early look in the box that was saved just over two minutes in.
NC State (8-2-5, 3-2-2) quickly countered after the save and earned a free kick just outside the box. The ensuing free kick forced a diving save from AJ Piela to keep it out.
The Wolfpack fired an in-close shot off the right post a few minutes later and finally broke through with a goal in the 11th minute.
From there, the two sides settled in and went back and forth for the remainder of the first half. NC State led 6-4 in shots after 45 minutes and both teams had four corners in the opening stanza.
The Louisville defense was called into quick order early after the halftime break, with Josh Jones standing tall as the last line of defense to keep a shot out.
The Cardinals then went in search of the equalizing goal for the next 40 minutes. However, Louisville's two best looks at the net in the second half came in the final 10 minutes.
A corner kick in the 82nd minute found the head of Jones in the center of the box, but the senior center back had his attempt sail just over the crossbar.
Jones was in the middle of the offensive action once again three minutes later, heading down a cross that came in from the left side, but Leon Kondic's effort at goal was slightly mishit and missed wide of the left post.
From there, the Wolfpack were able to run out the rest of the clock and secure the victory.
NC State outshot the Cardinals 13-8 on the night and finished with a 9-7 advantage in corner attempts.
Louisville closes out the regular season on Friday with a home match against SMU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
