Cards pick up third straight ACC win
ATLANTA – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Georgia Tech 4-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Â
David Mizrahi's three-set tiebreaker win on court five lifted Louisville to a 4-3 win at Georgia Tech to help the Cardinals improve to 13-9 on the season and 4-6 in ACC play.
Â
The Cards took the first point of the match with wins on courts two and three. After Georgia Tech gained an early advantage with a win at No. 1, the duo of Fabien Salle and Matthew Fung defeated Marcus McDaniel and Brandon McKinney 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to even the doubles tally. Natan Rodrigues and Sergio Hernandez quickly followed with a 6-2 win over Elias Shokry and Rohan Sachdev at No. 3 to clinch the first point of the match.
Â
In singles action, Tech pulled even with a win at the No. 1 spot, but Louisville quickly countered on court two where 26th-ranked Donnet bested No. 71 McDaniel 6-4, 6-4 to go back on top 2-1.
Â
Once again, Georgia Tech answered, this time with a three-set win on court four to tie the match at 2-2. The Cards battled back at the six-spot where Andre' Steinbach rebounded from a 6-0 first set loss to beat Robert Bauer 6-3, 6-2 in the next two sets to give Louisville a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Yellow Jackets earned yet another three-set win, this time at the No. 3 spot to even the score at 3-3.
Â
The match came down to court five, where Mizrahi came back after a 6-4 first set loss to Shokry and cruised to a 6-0 second set win before prevailing 7-6 after a 7-5 tiebreaker to seal the win.
Â
"After winning the doubles point, Georgia Tech came out strong during singles and got the first set in five singles matches," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We kept fighting hard and eventually turned things around. I'm so proud of the guys and how they battled today."
