Cardinals advance to play Duke on Friday

CARY, N.C. -- Tied at 3-3, the match came down to the University of Louisville freshman Andre Steinbach who delivered a straight set win to oust Notre Dame 4-3 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Thursday night at the Cary Tennis Center.

Notre Dame (13-14) took the doubles point with the No. 1 Irish pair of Jean-Marc Malkowski and Connor Fu beat Etienne Donnet and Alex Wesbrooks 6-2. The point was clinched when the Louisville duo of Fabien Salle and David Mizrahi fell 6-2 to Sebastian Dominko and Matthew Halpin on court two.

"Notre Dame had a great start and had a lot of momentum going into singles," said Rodrigo da Silva, UofL head coach. "We put our heads down and went to work and we were able to shift the momentum. I am very proud of the entire team, but I do have to mention our freshman Andre Steinbach, who was able to clinch his second 3-3 match of the year."

As singles play went underway, Cardinal David Mizrahi made quick work of Jameson Corsillo with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 to tie the score at one. No. 14-ranked Sebastian Dominko downed UofL's Natan Rodrigues 6-4, 6-2 on court one. Etienne Donnet, Louisville's No. 34-ranked senior tied the match at two with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Matthew Che.

The Irish retook the lead when Connor Fu of Notre Dame beat Sergio Hernandez 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. UofL's No. 61-ranked Fabien Salle outlasted Jean-Marc Malkowski 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 to knot the score at three.

Andre Steinbach beat Yu Zhang 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 position to deliver the win to the Cardinals (16-10), who advance to play Duke at 6 p.m. Friday.
