December 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals take a five-game winning streak into Wednesday’s game
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 18/17 Louisville women's basketball team (9-1) is set to finish off a three-game homestand with an in-state foe on Wednesday. The Cardinals welcome Morehead State (4-5) to the KFC Yum! Center for one of their last few non-conference games of the year on Wednesday, December 13. The Cardinals and Eagles will square off at 4 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra. It will be the first game of a doubleheader as the men's team will take on Arkansas State at 8 p.m. ET later that night.
The Cardinals are riding a five-game winning streak into Wednesday's game and are coming off a 73-61 win over rival Kentucky this past Sunday. It was the seventh-straight win over the Wildcats and it extended Louisville's longest winning streak in the rivalry. Head coach Jeff Walz picked up his 450th career win in the victory over the Wildcats and is the program's all-time winningest head coach.
In the win over Kentucky, another milestone was reached by one of the longest tenured members of the team. Senior Olivia Cochran eclipsed the 1000 career point mark against Kentucky in the third quarter. She is the 33rd player in program history to score 1,000 points or more during their Louisville careers. Cochran is the 14th player under Walz to score 1,000 points or more in their Cardinals career. With the win, Cochran and fellow senior Merissah Russell improved to 4-0 over Kentucky during their careers.
A number of newcomers to the rivalry stepped up for the Cardinals in the win over Kentucky. Eylia Love led the way with 14 points, Kiki Jefferson scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 11 points and Sydney Taylor was also in double figures with 13 points and she hit three shots from behind the arc. Playing in her second Battle for the Bluegrass game, Nyla Harris scored 13 points and had a team-best eight rebounds and three steals.

ABOUT THE EAGLES
Morehead State comes into Wednesday's matchup with a 4-5 record and are coming off a 53-49 win over Wheeling (W. Va.) this past Monday. Last season, Morehead State was 11-20 overall and 6-12 in conference play. So far this season, the Eagles have played one common opponent of the Cardinals. Morehead traveled to Tuscaloosa and fell to the Crimson Tide, 85-44, on Nov. 12. The Eagles are a strong three-point shooting team this season as they lead the OVC and rank 59th in the country with 7.9 three-pointers made per game. Morehead ranks third in the conference with a 33.5 three-point shooting percentage. The Eagles also attack the offensive glass well as they lead the league and rank 31st nationally with 15.3 offensive rebounds per game.
Series History - This will be the 28th meeting all-time between the Eagles and the Cardinals. It is the first time these two teams have met since the 2008-09 season, which was Jeff Walz's second season at the helm of the Cardinals. Louisville holds a 16-11 series advantage over Morehead State and they are 8-4 against the Eagles in games played in Louisville. This will be the Eagles first trip to the KFC Yum! Center as the last time the two teams played in Louisville, it was held at Freedom Hall.
Last Meeting - When a reporter told Louisville forward Angel McCoughtry that the 10th-ranked Cardinals turned it over 34 times in an otherwise easy 66-38 win over Morehead State in the Cardinal Classic on Sunday, the All-American did a double-take. McCoughtry had 17 points and 12 rebounds in 19 efficient minutes against the overmatched Eagles. Even with the mistakes Louisville (11-1) had little trouble winning its seventh straight. Candyce Bingham added 13 points and Janae Howard had a career-high 10 for Louisville, which held the Eagles (7-5) to 19 percent shooting and held a 64-35 edge in rebounds.
