October 27, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Bradley Sample and Gaetano D’Argento each scored their first goal of the season in the draw.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the final match of the regular season, the University of Louisville men's soccer team played No. 3 Wake Forest to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville closes out the regular season at 9-4-3 overall and 2-4-2 in ACC play. The Cardinals will now set their sights on the ACC Championships, which begin with the first round on Wednesday.
Wake Forest (11-1-5, 4-1-3) grabbed the opening goal on Friday, collecting a rebound off the post and putting it home for the first tally in the 27th minute.
The lead was short-lived though, as the Cardinals responded in less than two minutes. Sander Roed crossed a ball into the center of the box where Brandon McManus laid a pass off to Bradley Sample. The senior midfielder then blasted a right-footed shot past the diving keeper for his first goal of the season.
The Cards were on the board again seven minutes later in similar fashion. David Boccuzzo played in the initial cross and Roed left the ball off, this time for Gaetano D'Argento outside the top of the box. D'Argento then sent a shot toward the goal that was deflected by a defender and ended up in the net.
Louisville took the 2-1 advantage into halftime, despite getting just the two shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The lead held at 2-1 until the latter stages of the second half. Wake Forest finally knotted the game up with a goal with 10 minutes to play. Neither side would find the net over the last 10 minutes, ending the match level at two.
Wake Forest held an 18-4 advantage on shots Friday, with Alex Svetanoff notching a career-best seven saves.
