
Cards Battle But Fall to No. 6 Virginia in ACC Semifinals

Rome, Ga. — The University of Louisville men's tennis team battled but fell 4-0 to top-seeded Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the ACC Tennis Championship at the Rome Tennis Center.
Louisville falls to 19-8 (9-3 ACC) with the loss in its first ACC semifinal appearance.
No. 52 Bar Botzer and Chris Rodesch pulled away from Natan Rodrigues and Sergio Hernandez 6-3 to give Virginia the early edge in doubles. The Cards continued to battle in the remaining two doubles matches but Ryan Goetz and Inaki Montes outlasted Etienne Donnet and David Mizrahi 7-5 at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point for Virginia. Matthew Fung and Alex Wesbrooks were trailing 1-0 in a 6-6 tiebreak when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 after No. 23 Chris Rodesch defeated No. 101 Etienne Donnet 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Gianni Ross defeated Matthew Fung 6-1, 6-3 to push the lead to 3-0. The Cavaliers clinched the match when No. 85 Ryan Goetz bested Natan Rodrigues 6-4, 6-3. Josh Howard-Tripp and David Mizrahi each took their opponents to a ten-point tiebreak and Sergio Hernandez was in a third set when the match was called.
Up next, Louisville will await its opponent and seeding in the NCAA Tournament, which will be revealed on May 2 at 6 p.m.
