November 05, 2022 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals and Bearcats will tip off on Monday at 5 p.m. E.T. and broadcast on ACC Network
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fresh off the program's fourth-ever Final Four, the Louisville women's basketball team is back in action as they kick off the 2022-23 season. The Cardinals are set to begin the campaign against Cincinnati on Monday, November 7 at the KFC Yum! Center. The game will begin at 5 p.m. ET and will be aired nationally on the ACC Network.
The Cardinals have the early start as they are the first game of a triple-header on the ACC Network to kick off the 2022-23 basketball season. The Cardinals will be followed by Duke men's basketball at 7 p.m. and reigning national champion North Carolina men's basketball at 9 p.m. The ACC Network will have studio talent on site in Louisville to provide pregame analysis on ACC PM and then post game coverage on Nothing But Net.
Louisville is ranked seventh in the 2022-23 Associated Press preseason poll. The Cardinals received 556 points, 40 points shy of sixth place UConn. They were picked fifth in the USA Today poll with 642 points, 13 points shy of fourth place Tennessee. It marks the eighth-consecutive season that Louisville has been ranked in the top 10 of the AP preseason poll, the 11th time in the past 12 years and the 12th time in Walz's 16-year tenure.
Last season, Louisville compiled a 29-5 record and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the third time in the last four tournaments. They are the only program in the country that have been a No. 1 seed in three of the last four tournaments. They advanced to the Elite Eight for the fourth-straight season and defeated Michigan to advance to the Final Four.
Louisville has won five of the last six season openers and are 12-3 in season openers under Walz. Under Walz, they are 8-0 when opening the season on the road, 4-2 when opening at home and 0-1 at neutral venues. All-time, UofL is 27-20 in first games of the year.
The Cardinals have had several preseason recognitions prior to the season getting underway. They are just one of three schools to have a player on all five positional watch lists (Chrislyn Carr, Lieberman Award; Hailey Van Lith, Drysdale Award; Morgan Jones, Miller Award; Olivia Cochran, McClain Award; Josie Williams, Leslie Award). Van Lith and Jones were both named to the Preseason All-ACC team as the Cardinals were selected as league favorites. Jones and Van Lith were both selected to the Naismith Award Women's Watch List. Van Lith was also named a second team Preseason All-American by The Athletic.
ABOUT THE BEARCATS
Last season, Cincinnati went 11-17 overall and 4-11 in American Conference play. They return guard Jillian Hayes, who was the leading scorer (11.5) and rebounder (6.8) for the Bearcats last season. Cincinnati is under the direction of Michelle Clark-Heard, who has ties to Jeff Walz and Louisville. Clark-Heard was on Walz's initial staff when he got hired at Louisville and she spent five years with the Cardinals. She was a part of the 2009 National Runner-Up squad and helped coach Angel McCoughtry and Shoni Schimmel.
Series History - Louisville renews acquaintances with former conference foe Cincinnati in the season opener. After squaring off as conference foes in Conference USA, the BIG EAST and the American, the two teams will meet for the 65th time on November 7th. Louisville leads the all-time series 40-24. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since March 1, 2014, and the Cardinals have won the last six games against the Bearcats.
Last Meeting (Mar. 1, 2014) - Louisville knocked off Cincinnati 75-51 on the road before the impending regular season finale against No. 1 Connecticut. Fifth-year senior Tia Gibbs led the way with 17 points. Antonita Slaughter added 14 points, Asia Taylor finished with 12 and Shoni Schimmel scored 10, helping keep alive Louisville's bid for a share of the American Athletic Conference championship.
