November 13, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Louisville scored eight of the last 10 points to seal the win
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 7/5 Louisville women's basketball team faced its first road test of the season and edged out RV/RV Belmont 75-70 at the Curb Event Center Sunday afternoon. In a game that saw 17 ties and 20 lead changes, the Cardinals trailed by one with 2:17 remaining in the fourth but used an 8-2 run to close out the game and clinch the win.
"A game like this shows that we have to continue to compete, continue to grind, continue to push," said head coach Jeff Walz. "We are going to continue to play good teams, our league is tough and you cannot take a night off. You have to come in with a mentality that it is going to be a battle and that is why I scheduled this game here. We have a pretty darn good schedule that is going to challenge us and hopefully get us prepared for the ACC season."
Hailey Van Lith led all scorers with 25 points, her second 20-plus point game this season and her eighth in the last 12 games dating back to last season. Olivia Cochran put on a show for her birthday as she tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth career double-double. It is the second-straight game a Cardinal recorded a double-double after Van Lith had 12 points and 10 rebounds against IUPUI on Thursday.
Chrislyn Carr added 11 points and had three of Louisville's five three-pointers on the night. It was her second-straight game in double figures. Mykasa Robinson had a season-high nine points, one shy of her career high. She had the go-ahead layup with 1:45 remaining to put the Cardinals up for good.
It was a back and forth first half but the Cardinals faced a six-point deficit with 1:49 left in the second quarter. Robinson got the Cardinals started with a layup and a foul to cut the deficit to three. Merissah Russell hit a three the next time down the court with an assist from Carr to tie the game at 34. In the final possession of the half, Cochran hauled in an offensive board and it got dished around to Carr for a three at the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 37-34 lead at the half.
In the fourth quarter trailing by one with under two minutes left, Cochran found a cutting Robinson for the layup to give the Cardinals a 69-68 lead. The final six points for the Cards came from the free throw line as they were 14-for-14 in the fourth quarter from the line and 20-for-21 (95.2) for the game.
The Cardinals will continue their stretch away from home as they head to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament next weekend. The Cardinals will begin the tournament against Gonzaga on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It will be a rematch of the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament where the Cards came away with a 68-59 victory.
