NAPLES, Fla. – The University of Louisville women's golf team opened the spring season by playing intra-state rival Kentucky to a 4-4 tie in its match-play event in Naples, Fla. on Tuesday.

Louisville retained the Battle of the Bluegrass Cup based on the previous head-to-head win over versus Kentucky during the 2020 campaign.

Eight of the nine Cardinals were in action on Tuesday versus the Wildcats.

The teams decided before the match that every individual match would result in a winner, so no half points were awarded for ties. It would come into play later in the match.

Mairead Martin, who played the first match of the day at 8 a.m., won her match 3 and 2, while Carmen Griffiths was 1 Up during her round of play.

Carly Haines won was also 1 Up during her 20 holes of competition, while Gabbi Bentancourt was the other winner for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals return to action on Feb. 20-22 in Melbourne, Fla., when they host the Moon Golf Invitational.
