Louisville took a 3-1 loss to Kentucky on Tuesday night.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team took a 3-1 loss against No. 17 Kentucky in the annual Battle of the Bluegrass on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (2-2-0) tallied the opening goal on the night, but Kentucky responded with three unanswered goals to claim the victory.
The night got off to a fast start for the Cardinals as Louisville's first shot of the night found the back of the net just over four minutes into the match. Nico Diaz collected a loose ball outside the box and played a cross that was placed home by Aboubacar Camara. It was the second goal of the season for the forward.
The Cardinals kept the offensive pressure on, but Kentucky answered back in the 24th minute. Following a foul, the Wildcats quickly played a free kick forward and got behind the back line and the ensuing shot attempt deflected off the inside of the left post and across the line.
Kentucky (3-0-1) edged out in front late in the first half as a deep throw into the center of the box was headed into the net by the Cardinals in an attempt to clear. The own goal gave the Wildcats a 2-1 edge in the 43rd minute that they carried into the halftime break.
UofL continued its offensive attack early in the second half, taking the first six shots of the half, but the Cardinals were unable to find the breakthrough.
The Wildcats finally added an insurance goal in the 81st minute to stretch the lead to two, where the match would finish.
Louisville outshot UK 17-11 on the night and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. The physical match featured 26 total fouls, six yellow cards and a red card that went against Kentucky.
The Cardinals open up ACC play on Friday night with Wake Forest coming to town. The match will be the second half of a doubleheader with the Louisville women. The women's team kicks off at 5 p.m. ET with the men scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
