Kouijzer's Goal Lifts No. 4 Cardinals to 1-0 Win at No. 18 Duke
September 24, 2021 | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.C. – Julie Kouijzer's goal in the fourth minute of the game lifted the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 1-0 win at No. 18 Duke in an ACC contest Friday evening at Jack Katz Stadium. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 8-1 (2-0 ACC) while the Blue Devils drop to 3-5 (0-2 ACC).
"Always great to get an ACC road win and against a great Duke team," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Today we wanted to mix up the tempo more on both sides of the ball and I believe we successfully did that. We generated some great opportunities which we need to capitalize on moving forward."
Â
The Cardinals (8-1, 2-0 ACC) opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the game after earning their first penalty corner. Senior Alli Bitting got the play started and sophomore Charlie Oirschot provided the stop for junior Julie Kouijzer who converted on her third goal of the season. Â
Â
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after each team fired off four shots with all of the Cardinals' attempts landing on goal and UofL owning a 2-1 edge in corners.
Â
In the third quarter, the Cardinals tallied a pair of shots on two corners in the third quarter, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
Â
The fourth quarter brought more scoring chances for the Cardinals with three penalty corners, but Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch recorded three saves to hold Louisville at bay.
Â
Freshman Mila de Kuijer posted one save en route to her fifth shutout of the season.
Â
The Cardinals will return to action on Monday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a matchup against No. 19 Ohio State.
