Cardinals Pass First Road Test, Win 1-0 at Saint Louis
September 02, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Morgan Bentley’s goal in the 60th minute led the Cardinals to victory.
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – University of Louisville women's soccer passed its first road test of the season, winning 1-0 at Saint Louis on Thursday night behind a goal by Morgan Bentley in the 60th minute.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals move to a perfect 4-0 on the year, while the three-time reigning A-10 champion Billikens fall to 1-4.
"That is a great road win against a very good team," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I'm very proud of our team as we keep learning and growing."
Â
In the first four minutes, Julia Simon had two shots and Savina Zamborini had one, but the Cardinals could not convert. The remainder of the first half was a defensive battle as the two teams went into the locker room at halftime scoreless. The Cardinals had four first half shots to Saint Louis' three.
Â
Louisville's first chance in the second half came in the 54th minute as Morgan Bentley got free in the box and was fouled by the Billikens to set up a penalty kick by Maisie Whitsett. Whitsett delivered a strong kick to the left side of the net, but Saint Louis goalkeeper Emily Puricelli guessed right and preserved the scoreless tie.
Â
Six minutes later, it was Bentley again getting free in the scoring area and this time the Cardinals were able to convert. Nina Nicosia sent the ball to Bentley at the top of the box, who took a dribble and delivered a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net just past the outstretched arms of the SLU goalkeeper to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Â
It marked Bentley's second goal of the season and Nicosia's second assist of the year.
Â
The Billikens had a chance to tie it in the 67th minute when Mattyn Summers got behind the Louisville defense. She attempted to go high from the right side of the net, but goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos made a tremendous save to keep Saint Louis off the board.
Â
Kouzelos thwarted another Billikens' threat just four minutes later, saving Hannah Sawyer's shot in the front of the net.
Â
Bentley nearly doubled the Cardinals' lead in the 85th minute, but her left-footed kick sailed just wide.
Â
However, Louisville would not need the insurance as they stopped all of Saint Louis' advances in the final minutes to secure the 1-0 win.
Â
Kouzelos finished with three saves en route to her second consecutive shutout.
Â
Both teams finished with 10 shots, while Louisville had four on goal to Saint Louis' three.
Â
The Cardinals return home this Sunday when they play Western Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. ET.
