November 04, 2021 | Women's Basketball
Five players scored in double figures for the Cardinals, led by Liz Dixon’s 15 and Chelsie Hall’s 12.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No.6 Louisville women's basketball opened its season with a 106-32 exhibition rout of Union University (Tenn.) on Thursday night inside the KFC Yum! Center.
"It was just a really good basketball game for us," said head coach Jeff Walz. "We've still got some things to work on but I thought our defense was really good overall and I was pleased with the way most of our kids played."
The Cardinals were sharp from the opening tip, converting six of its first nine shots from the field to jump out to a 15-7 lead. Hailey Van Lith and Liz Dixon combined to notch 14 of the Cardinals' first 20 points.
The lead grew to 27 as an Olivia Cochran coast-to-coast steal and finish capped off a 9-0 run that forced the Bulldogs to use their second timeout at the 7:11 mark. The Cardinals continued to keep their foot on the gas, notching a 24-0 run over a six-minute stretch in the second quarter to head into the break with the 61-15 lead.
Louisville maintained its momentum by opening the third quarter on 12-4 run and cruised the rest of the way to a 106-32 win.
Five players scored in double figures, led by Dixon's 15. Chelsie Hall finished with 12 points, Van Lith added 11, while Cochran and Payton Verhulst finished with 10 each.
The Cardinals forced 31 turnovers, while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 8-of-18 from 3-point range. They outscored the Bulldogs in the paint, 60-16.
Louisville opens the regular season against No.22 Arizona in The Invitational at the Sanford Pentagon on Friday, Nov. 12.
