Cardinal Alumna will be an assistant at her alma mater.
Callie McGowan, a former standout on the University of Louisville rowing team, will join the coaching staff of her alma mater according to Derek Copeland, UofL head coach.
Â
"We are very excited to have Callie back in our family," said Copeland. "She is such a competitor and really knows how to work through good times and bad. She always has had a bit of a chip on her shoulder, a focused determination, to say the least. Now, though, it seems that her drive has grown in to something that is even more special. She is sharky, experienced, and ready to contribute to the next phase of our program. We welcome her back and cannot wait to see her impact on the program."
Â
McGowan returns to the Ville from Clemson, where she served as a graduate assistant coach for Tigers' rowing program for two years and completed her master's degree in athletic leadership. At University of Louisville, she graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science with a minor in sports administration.
Â
"As a former rower for Louisville, I am honored to be able to come back and continue to push this team to new levels both in our conference and on the national stage," said McGowan. "I believe Derek and the other coaches have a clear vision for this team. I am very thankful for this incredible opportunity and am looking forward to getting this season started."
Â
At Clemson, she worked closely in the development and on campus recruitment of walk-on and novice athletes while assisting with the day-to-day operations for the novice and varsity teams. She also helped promote Clemson Rowing on multiple social media platforms as well as collected, analyzed and logged team data and results for coaching records.
Â
During her undergraduate years, McGowan served as an assistant rowing coach at Ashland Rowing Club in Ashland, Oregon and was a Learn to Row Coach at Three Rivers Rowing Association in Pittsburgh. Â
Â
McGowan rowed all four years for the Cardinals as an undergrad. As a senior, she was named as a CRCA Scholar athlete and to the All-ACC Academic list. As a junior, she was named to ACC Academic Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Rowing Team and received 2017 Scholar Award from Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. She rowed exclusively in the Cardinals' varsity eight boat and her V8+ crew finished fifth at the ACC Championship, and helped score Louisville a team victory at a double dual against Indiana and Kansas and took first place at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. As a sophomore, she was named to All-ACC Academic Rowing Team, ACC Academic Honor Roll and was a CRCA Scholar Athlete. She closed the spring in the varsity eight boat for a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championship and was also in the V8+ at Michigan, at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and in a win at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. As a freshman in 2014-15, she closed freshman season in the second varsity eight boat in a second-place finish at the ACC Championship. She also rowed in the 2V8+ at Michigan and at Clemson Invitational. Â
