Softball Senior Salute: Caitlin Ferguson
May 12, 2020 | Softball
With the 2020 softball season cut short due to the onset of COVID-19, the University of Louisville softball program is honoring senior Caitlin Ferguson who has completed her playing career.
Â
"My four years at the University of Louisville have been nothing short of the best experience I have ever had. I have made lifelong friendships and memories that I will never forget," said Ferguson in a letter to UofL fans published on social media. "Although I would have LOVED to continue my softball career, I have decided to continue my education and go to pharmacy school next fall."
Â
Ferguson, a senior infielder from Versailles, Kentucky, is a four-year starter, spending her first two seasons at third base and taking over as the Cardinals' shortstop her junior year. During her time at UofL, she helped the team to 109 wins and an NCAA Regional Final appearance in 2019.
Â
With her senior season cut short after only 23 games, Ferguson still amassed impressive career numbers, playing in 175 games with 170 starts with 28 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs. Additionally, she tallied 89 runs, tying a school record with four runs in a game – twice. She also drove in 94 RBI, including a career-high 40 in 2018.
Â
Ferguson earned 2018 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Southeast Region second team honors as a sophomore and was a 2017 All-ACC Freshman Team selection.
Â
The exercise science/pre-pharmacy major earned her bachelor's degree in May 2020 and will enroll in Pharmacy School in the fall of 2020. She was a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member and named to the All-ACC Academic Team twice.
Â
"Ferg's love and passion for Louisville will be greatly missed," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "She took great pride in wearing Louisville across her chest and it showed in the way that she represented our university and our softball program with such honor throughout her career. I know how much she enjoyed playing in front CardNation; especially when we matched up with Kentucky, which ironically is where she is headed to pursue her pharmacy degree. We will certainly miss her presence, but we are equally excited for the great opportunity that she has in front of her."
