Checking in with Maddy Newman
April 16, 2020 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the 2020 season unexpectedly ended due to COVID-19, we are checking in with members of the team as they adjust to taking classes online while navigating time spent away from campus in what would normally be the middle of their season. Up next in the series is Maddy Newman.
Â
When the season ended, the junior second baseman led Louisville with 13 runs and stood second on the team with eight stolen bases. As the Cardinals prepared to open ACC play at home with a three-game series against Boston College, the team received the first in a series of notifications that would ultimately lead to the cancellation of the remainder of the season.
Â
"It didn't feel real at first, but I knew that no matter what happened the team was going to overcome it by sticking together," said Newman.
Â
The Osceola, Indiana native remained in Louisville to finish the semester and was able to eventually settle into a new normal as she continued classes online.
Â
"It took a little bit to adjust to having a different schedule, but I have found one that works for me. It starts off with a healthy breakfast, working out, homework, and staying in touch with teammates."

I would encourage fellow student-athletes to stay positive and productive. Do something that makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day. Get 1% better.
Â

I am currently still in Louisville, so I have been able to run and workout on the cardio path.

If I could see anyone in concert, it would probably be Billie Eilish

I will never forget beating Florida State on our home field to give them their first series loss in seven years. It was one of the best games I have ever been part of.
Â
If you could play any sport other than softball, what would it be?
I would probably play basketball.
Â
Do you have a favorite "binge" show or series that you are watching?
I just finished Tiger King. Wild.
Â
What is your favorite quote, saying or motto?
I have SO many. I feel like this one is the most relatable at the moment: 'Each moment you have a choice about how you use your energy and where to place your attention. Make sure it is benefiting you and serving your greatest vision.'
